"Doulos" is the greek word for "bondservant" or "love slave." This was how the Apostle Paul identified himself first in most of his letter in the New Testament before referring to what he was called to do. A "love slave" was one who chose slavery freely in Bible times due to the fact that he would rather live in service to his master than live independently. If one were ever to make that decisiion, he would have to do so publicly before the city magistrates who would then pierce his ear and place in it a gold ring.
What did Paul see in Jesus Christ that would make him want to be His "love slave" forever? What did he see that we're not? This really then is the goal of our instruction; the goal of our learning - not to get our heads so full of knowledge so we can debate and win every argument, but so that we can know Him who gave His life for us.
"Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?...in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Rom 8:33-39)."
In the face of such love, how can we not press on to become one of His own - abandoned to His purpose iin our generation?
